How Liposuction Works

BODY CONTOURING AND EVEN BREAST REDUCTION CAN BE DONE A NUMBER OF WAYS, INCLUDING TUMESCENT LIPOSUCTION PROCEDURES.

Bodyweight typically goes up for most of us, as we’ve gotten older. And although liposuction or a tummy tuck procedure is not a replacement for exercise and good nutrition, these procedures ARE sometimes sought after by men and women who want to improve their body contours to ‘reduce the bulge’ and re-define their waistline, or slim their hips and thighs.

Questions to ask yourself about Liposuction and other modern Fat Reduction techniques:

  • Has your Body Mass Index (BMI) gone up with every passing year?
  • Along with weight gain, have you started to notice uneven fat distribution and bulges that persist even though you’ve hit the gym again?

Even thin, fit individuals can have areas of their body that are saggy, bulgy or soft. If this is you, or if you are slightly overweight but with a stable BMI and uneven body fat distribution, then liposuction or a tummy tuck might be the answer.

Areas of the body where bulges form, such as the thighs, stomach/abdomen/belly, that are resistant to exercise.

  • especially if we’ve experienced weight changes or had children. Even if we live an active, healthy lifestyle but find ‘stubborn pockets’ of body fat that simply won’t budge, Liposuction may be a workable body contouring solution for some patients.

Good candidates for liposuction surgery usually answer YES to the following questions:

  • Are you generally fit and healthy?
  • Do you have some stubborn bulges you just can’t budge with exercise or dieting?
  • Do you want to reduce stubborn fat deposits, and contour your body to smooth out lumps and bumps?
  • If you’re a male, do you have ‘moobs’ or ‘man boobs’ that trouble you?

If so, then Liposuction Surgery (body contouring with tumescent liposuction) might be the solution you are seeking.

For men, Gynaecomastia surgery may be the answer to reducing fatty breast tissues (a combination of liposuction and surgery).

LIPOSUCTION GUIDE

LIPOSUCTION MAY NOT SUIT ALL PATIENTS. GET A PROFESSIONAL OPINION FROM ONE OF OUR TEAM.

Every patient is different.  You MAY (or may not) be a good candidate for liposuction or lipo-sculpture (a more refined version of body contouring) – many patients may benefit from a combined approach – but it really depends on the patient and the areas of excess body fat they are wanting to reduce with LIPO.

The best way to tell if Liposuction is a good way to meet your body contouring goals is to meet with our Aesthetic Medicine Surgeon (Cosmetic Injections) for Liposuction in Melbourne.

  • If you have bulges but good skin resiliency and are generally fit, liposuction might be a suitable option for you to smooth out certain areas of the body and reduce fat.
  • But if you have TOO MUCH excess fat, or if you have very loose skin, then a Tummy Tuck and/or weight-stability program may be required in lieu of liposuction (or a combined approach).

WHAT IS LIPOSUCTION?

Liposuction, also known as “lipo” or “lipoplasty,” is considered a generally well-tolerated procedure for suitable, healthy patients; but that does not mean it doesn’t have risks. All surgery has risks.

How popular is Liposuction Surgery?

Lipo is one of the most frequently requested procedures by patients in Australia and other countries around the world.  Whilst it is a surgery and all surgery is serious, it’s considered a minimally invasive procedure in that there are not large incisions made – rather, an small incision is made to insert a suction-assisted device (Cannulae) to reduce fat cells in the treated areas.

Two other popular body contouring and body reshaping procedures are:

  • Fat reduction using heating or cooling-based non-surgical fat cell reduction technologies
  • Tummy Tuck Surgery (Abdominoplasty) or a Belt Lipectomy – as well as Post-Weight Loss Body Contouring Surgeries
  • Most major surgeries are best performed in a fully accredited Hospital for monitoring patient-safety and comfort during surgery and initial recovery; sometimes Lipo is also performed in a Day Surgery Hospital (as an outpatient)

Coco Ruby Tumescent Liposuction can help to reshape virtually any area of the body by removing fat from stubborn areas that are not responsive to lifestyle.

What is Liposuction, exactly?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that improves the body’s contour by reducing excess fat from deposits located between the skin and muscle.

Tumescent Liposuction is one of the most popular types of liposuction procedures, but there are several different kinds.

  • Liposuction is a proven surgical technique for body contouring. It works but does NOT take the place of a healthy lifestyle and results depend on you maintaining a healthy lifestyle before and after surgery.
  • It involves the use of a small stainless steel tube, called a cannula (from the Latin word for reed, tube, cane).
  • As the name itself implies, high-tech suctioning equipment (lipo suction) is a KEY component of Liposuction fat cell reduction.
  • Injections are made into the areas to be treated to help reduce swelling and bleeding before suctioning.
  • The cannula is firmly connected to a powerful suction pump and your Surgeon then inserts the cannula into the areas of fat, through small incisions in the skin, to reduce the amount of body fat or fat cells in that area of the body.
  • Fat reduction and body contouring are accomplished as the suction cannula create tiny tunnels through the fatty layers (fat tissues).
  • After healing from the surgery, these tiny tunnels collapse, resulting in an improved body contour.

RECOVERY TIMES FROM LIPOSUCTION CAN RANGE FROM A FEW DAYS TO SEVEN DAYS TO SEVERAL WEEKS.

Recovery times do vary, but ideally, allow 2 weeks off of normal duties if you can. And ASK your Surgeon how long to wait before resuming certain activities, particularly lifting, exercise or driving.

You may be very tender and quite sore, even bruised, after Liposuction. However, depending on your health, your natural recovery ability and what you had done – you may be able to go back to some work duties in as little as a week or two following your procedure.

If at all possible, however, you’ll want to take 2 weeks to recovery so that you can not over-stress yourself and allow your body to heal.
